Francis Ford Coppola needed a Sicily untouched by modernity for The Godfather in 1971. He found it in Savoca, a medieval village clinging to a hillside 320 metres above the Ionian Sea, where stone alleys had remained unchanged since the 13th century.
Bar Vitelli, a modest tavern on Piazza Fossia, became the setting where Michael Corleone asked Apollonia's father for permission to court her. The bar's interior — wooden beams, terracotta floors, faded Campari posters — appeared on screen exactly as it stood, and owner Antonino Vitelli served the crew espresso between takes. Today the bar preserves film stills, signed photographs, and the original wicker chairs Coppola's team rearranged for the courtship scene.
Savoca and neighbouring Forza d'Agrò provided Coppola with the visual grammar of Sicilian tradition: narrow vicoli where donkeys still carry produce, Norman archways framing views of Mount Etna, and chiesa madre bell towers that marked time for centuries of harvest and vendemmia. The Chiesa di San Nicolò in Savoca, built in 1130, hosted Michael and Apollonia's wedding. Its Baroque altar and rose window became shorthand for Old World honour, the aesthetic opposite of New York's urban violence. Forza d'Agrò's Piazza della Triade supplied the funeral procession — a scene requiring 200 local extras, many of whom had never seen a film camera.

Savoca's population peaked at 3,000 in the 1950s and now counts fewer than 1,600 residents, many elderly, sustaining themselves through olive cultivation and boutique tourism. The village's medieval layout — defensive switchbacks, a single main strada — meant Coppola shot scenes within a 400-metre radius, yet the film made Savoca synonymous with Sicilian authenticity worldwide. Bar Vitelli receives 15,000 visitors annually, most ordering granita di mandorla at the same marble counter where Al Pacino stood. The church, the bar, the cobbled lanes: all remain functional spaces, not museum sets, and the godfather tour Sicily Taormina routes preserve that lived-in quality. Tours departing Taormina cover the 18-kilometre mountain road to Savoca in 35 minutes, then proceed to Forza d'Agrò's Convento dei Cappuccini, where Coppola filmed dialogue scenes under chestnut trees that still shade the cloister.
